Nasruddin was tired of feeding and washing his donkey, so he asked his wife Fatima to do it. She refused, and the argument rose to the level of a dispute in which it was decided that whoever speaks first should feed the donkey.

For a while, Nasruddin sat stoically in a corner and sulked. Fatima soon became quite bored and left with their son Ahmet to visit the neighbors.

Now, that day there happened to be a family of Gypsies who had pitched their camp outside the town, and they wandered around town, looking hither and thither to find something to steal.

One of them entered the house of Nasruddin, where it was silent. In the family quarters, she saw the Mullah, but he remained sitting impassively in the corner. Immediately she called the rest of the Gypsies and they ransacked the house, grabbed everything they could find together, and placed it in their bags.

The Mullah sat in his corner and witnessed this entire debacle as it proceeded without moving or saying a word. The head Gypsy even snatched the turban off his head, but he never uttered a word, thinking, If I make a sound, then Fatima will win and I will be obliged to feed and water and wash the calf! So he did not even heed to the Gypsy, who exploited his passivity. When the band of thieves had looted enough, they left the house with the front door wide open.

As dinnertime came about, Fatima was still enjoying herself, gossiping nonstop with the neighbors, and she sent Ahmet with a bowl of soup to bring to Nasruddin.

Ahmet was understandably confused when he got home to see the front door left open. Inside, he found his father there sitting in the corner alone with the place in shambles.

Ahmet cried out, “Father, what happened?” Nasruddin kept pointing to his head to indicate his stolen turban, but the boy misinterpreted the strange gestures and emptied the bowl of soup on Nasruddin’s head, then beat a hasty retreat to inform his mother what happened.

When Fatima learned of the situation from Ahmet and they rushed back, she saw the house ransacked, all the drawers and doors open, the valuables gone, Nasruddin sitting in the corner, silent but scowling, covered with soup.

“What have you done, you brain-dead fool‽ ” she shrieked. “Where’s our furniture‽ Whatthe—‽ ”

“Ah ha ha hahahaha! Now you must feed and wash the donkey!” Nasruddin exclaimed with glee, jumping up and clapping. “And I hope you’re pleased with what you accomplished through your boneheaded stubbornness!”
